Ever heard of a seep?
Dr. Spangler of UT's Plant Sciences department will share with us how she and her students re-created this rare native habitat, where water wells up out of the ground and flows along the surface, on the grounds of the Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum. Dr. Spangler will share with us why they decided to undertake this unique project, what native plants require this habitat, and why seeps are important to native ecosystems. Along with her colleagues Dr. Edward Schilling and James (JD) Zimmerman, who inspired and helped with the creation of the garden, Dr. Spangler will give us a guided tour. Don't miss it!
About Amanda Spangler:
Amanda Spangler is a Lecturer in Plant Sciences at the University of Tennessee who advances environmental sustainability through community-engaged, field-based teaching. She leads high-impact learning partnerships through courses, connecting students with local gardens and organizations to support healthier, more biologically diverse, and ecologically resilient communities. She collaborates with community experts as co-educators and creates practical, place-based experiences where students apply sustainable growing practices beyond the classroom. She also models sustainability and experiments with course concepts in her garden at home, which is certified as a Tennessee Smart Yard, a TN Urban Forestry Council Tree Sanctuary, a National Wildlife Federation Wildlife Sanctuary, a Firefly Sanctuary, and a Monarch Waystation.
